AU2012. Cemeteries.

New year and new Australian post. This time I'm going to write in English. New year, new language! For my first post in 2012 I'll speak about one of my favourite topics: Cemeteries. Of course, this a boring topic, a little bit creepy, sinister, macabre... But in Cairns cemeteries are different too. I've never seen a tropical cemetery. Yes, you have heard well: Tropical. Cairns has two main cemeteries: The City's Cemetery located in Manuda area and The Pioneer Cemetery located in McLeod Street.

The first one is actually working and it is the main place to bury the dead. It's a beautiful place surrounded by trees and palms. Everything is green and there are a lot of birds.

The second one is more interesting. At The Pioneer Cemetery took place on December 16, 1887, the first burial. Actually, this cemetery is classified as a registered Pioneer Cemetery and is managed by the Council subject to conditions from the Environmental Protection Agency. There is an information rotunda within the grounds providing information on location of graves and those buried. Not all graves in the cemetery have headstones. No plaques may be added to, or restoration works permitted.

The place is a forest with many tombs. In the middle, there is a building with information about the people buried in this cemetery. If you're interested in some lost ancestor you have two options: To come here and search through plaques or use the online search engine:
http://www.cairns.qld.gov.au/facilities-and-recreation/cemeteries/cemetery-search

You can find any person in a few seconds!

With this I say goodbye to you for a few days. I'm going to prepare the next post, much more cheerful and fun: the south of Cairns.

Bye!
